Birds Eye Steamfresh Riced Cauliflower
Birds Eye Steamfresh Riced Cauliflower

WHAT: Birds Eye Steamfresh Riced Cauliflower

STATS: Varies by flavor. A serving (1 cup) of the Savory Herb variety contains 80 calories and 5 fat, 6 carbohydrate, 3 fiber, 3 sugar and 1 protein grams. We found them at Wal-Mart, 700 Bowman Road, Little Rock. Visit birdseye.com.

THE SKINNY: Mild, versatile and low-carb cauliflower is still having its moment.

While you might not like cauliflower in floret form, how about something finer? Riced cauliflower, which has the mouth-feel of a starch but the nutrition of a vegetable, is all the rage. You could mince up a head with a food processor or box grater. Or you could let Birds Eye, which has introduced several "lightly sauced" flavors -- among them Savory Herb, Roasted Garlic and Italian Cheese -- do all the work. You just microwave it in the bag for a few minutes and eat.

Well, maybe season first, then eat. I didn't detect much "sauce" or "savory" or "herbs" in the flavor or the ingredients list of the Savory Herb (contains: cauliflower, water, sunflower oil, zucchini, onion, sea salt, garlic, cornstarch, parsley and black pepper). Birds Eye apparently means that "lightly" part.
