The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 1.62 to 356.92 Friday.

Only eight of the 18 stocks gained ground Friday.

Dillard's shares rose 4.2 percent on almost five times its average volume.

Deltic Timber fell 4.9 percent in heavy trading.

For the week, 10 stocks rose.

Communications Sales & Leasing climbed 9 percent for the week.

America's Car-Mart dropped 18 percent for the week.

Total volume for the index was 33.1 million shares. The average daily volume for the week was 34 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
