Basketball: Lampo, Jessieville upend Greenland

CHARLESTON -- Jessieville coach Matt Carter said senior post Kellie Lampo often told her teammates in the huddle Friday to just lob the ball up and she'll make a play at the basket.

Lampo did just that scoring a game-high 33 points in a 63-59 victory against Greenland in the semifinals of the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament in the Tiger Center.

"Lampo was big scoring all of our points," Carter said. "We were doing a good job getting it to her. She just wanted the ball to make the plays. Credit to her teammates getting it to her because it goes both ways."

Jessieville took a 41-40 lead into the final quarter, but Lampo scored a team-high 11 points to help close out the game.

Greenland (23-6) cut the lead to 51-50 late in the fourth quarter, but Jessieville used a quick 6-0 run to gain a 57-50 lead and held on after that.

"The girls did what they were asked to do," Greenland coach Alan Barton said. "We knew who their best player was in Lampo. She showed why she is their best player. But we didn't back down and we battled."

Jessieville found high-percentage shots early and often with Lampo scoring under the basket while double- and triple-teamed. The Lady Lions made 26 of 46 field-goal attempts in the game.

"It doesn't feel like we made that many shots," Carter said. "When you are sitting over there coaching, you always think things are going wrong. But it was nice to get good looks and make them."

Greenland was able to keep itself in the game by making seven 3-point baskets, all in the initial three quarters.

The Lady Pirates used back-to-back 3-pointers from McKayla Redmond and Fiona Wilson to cut the lead to 35-34 in the third quarter.

"Every time they tried to make a little run, it seemed we'd go down and knock down a three," Barton said. "We were keeping it close with them with the help of the outside shots."

Wilson finished with a team-high 24 points, while Redmond added 12 for the Lady Pirates. MaKayla Wilson added 11 points for Jessieville (26-4).

Jessieville took a 24-21 lead into halftime with the help of a strong first half from Lampo.

Lampo scored 19 of the Lady Lions' 24 first-half points to lead the way. She also scored 10 of the team's 12 points in the first quarter to get the offense going.

"We know them well because we go play in their camp in the summer," Barton said. "They won this time. They played hard. Those girls know who to get the ball to."

Lamar 55, Charleston 28

Lamar (24-5) jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter and didn't look back to earn its way into the regional championship game.

Charleston (19-10) missed nine shots and turned the ball over nine times in a scoreless first quarter. That allowed Lamar to build an 18-0 lead heading into the second quarter. The Lady Warriors were able to push their advantage out to 32-12 heading into halftime.

Lamar's balanced offense was led by freshman Lakyn Sanders' team-high 14 points. Madison Wyles had 13 and Graycee Wilkins added 12 for the Lady Warriors.

Jada McDowell, Hattie Newhart and Rachel Rudd each scored a team-high six points for Charleston.

Boys

Charleston 67, Jessieville 52

Charleston used a strong performance from senior forward Phillip Hampton to advance to the finals of the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament.

Hampton scored a game-high 25 points to lead the way for the Tigers. Brandon Fenner added 16 points, and Jackson Rowland had 10.

Jessieville was led by Sawyer Lamb's team-high 18 points. Alex Burleson added 16 for the Lions.

Jessieville (22-9) jumped out to an 18-12 lead after the first quarter, but Charleston (21-9) was able to take a 32-28 lead into halftime. The Tigers then pushed their advantage out to 52-40 heading into the game's final quarter.

Brandon Fenner pushed the lead out to 61-47 late in the fourth quarter to put the game well out of reach.

Lamar 69, Paris 65

The Warriors held a 55-45 lead heading into the final quarter, but the Eagles quickly cut into that lead.

A basket from Kris Graham cut the Lamar lead to 62-58 with less than four minutes to play. But the Warriors closed out the game strong to pull away.

Lamar (25-5) held an 18-14 lead after the first quarter. The Warriors then pushed that lead out to 34-22 with a 16-2 run in the second quarter. Paris then used a 8-3 run to cut the lead to 37-30 at the break.

Lamar's balanced offense was led by Christian Beeman, who finished with a game-high 18 points. Zederick Lee added 17, Porter Anderson had 12 while Albert Boyce and Ethan Warren each finished with 11 each.

Talik Robinson led the way for Paris (22-9) with a team-high 17 points. Race Taylor added 15, and Tyler Atchison had 13 for the Eagles.
