A MOTLEY KREWE

Good times roll

Mystic Krewe of Liberi Charity Ball raises almost $50K for children’s center

Who knew the fourth annual Mystic Krewe of Liberi Charity Ball would provide an education. For instance, a lesson in how to pronounce the familiar slogan "Laissez les bon temps rouler!" ("Let the good times roll!") by master of ceremonies Neal Gladner.

The ball, presented by the nonprofit Kye-Yac International, took place Feb. 18 at the historic Hamp Williams Building in Hot Springs as a benefit for the Ouachita Children's Center. Honorary chairmen were David and Rachel Mangan.

Guests -- who paired their evening and cocktail attire with festive Mardi Gras masks and beads -- bid on silent auction items, sipped libations and enjoyed passed crab cakes and later, more Cajun cuisine by Bleu Monkey Grill. They also danced to music by Doc Bryce Productions. Juggler Justin Chastant, mime Michelle Crandell and fortuneteller "Madam Zaheera" (Nan Cameron) added to the entertainment.

Highlighting the evening was a parade that flowed into the coronation of the Queen and King of the ball, Susan Harper and Scott Smith.

The event raised about $49,500 to benefit children in Garland and Clark counties, according to Sallie Culbreath, public relations and volunteer coordinator for Ouachita Children's Center. The center, which consists of an emergency shelter for children in crisis in Hot Springs, also has an office in Arkadelphia.
