Africa’s Great Civilizations How they shaped their history.

Africa's contributions to the development of art, language, writing, agriculture, government, the arts and sciences are the topic of the new three-part, six-hour documentary series Africa's Great Civilizations. It was produced, written and hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and airs at 8 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday on AETN.

The series includes interviews with historians, writers, paleoanthropologists and geneticists as it examines everything from trade to social structures to religion and Africa's interactions with the rest of the world. It seeks to provide a comprehensive narrative about African history and its diverse people.

"We made this series to end ignorance about the African past, to reveal how Africans not only shaped the history of their continent, but also how profoundly and extensively Africa has shaped the contours of our modern world," Gates says.
