Small Works on Paper tour to start out in Forrest City

The Arkansas Arts Council's 2017 Small Works on Paper touring exhibition, showcasing work by 36 members of the Arkansas Artist Registry with maximum dimensions of 18-by-24 inches, starts a statewide tour Tuesday-Jan. 27 at the Fine Arts Center, East Arkansas Community College, 1700 Newcastle Road, Forrest City.

David Houston, executive director of the Bo Bartlett Center at Columbus State University's College of the Arts in Columbus, Ga., selected five artists -- Sandy Barksdale of Cotter, J.P. Bell of Fayetteville, Kristin DeGeorge of Hot Springs, Leah Grant of Arkadelphia and Daniella Napolitano of Little Rock -- to receive cash purchase awards for their works, which will become part of the exhibition's permanent collection. Conway-based Red Curtain Theatre kicks off its 2017 season with Love and ... Broadway, A Valentine Musical Revue, Feb. 10-12 in Staples Auditorium, Hendrix College, 1600 Washington Ave., Conway.

Preservation cinema

March 31 is the deadline to submit entries for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program's 2017 Arkansas Historic Film Prize, short films by Arkansas high school students about historic properties in the state. Competition co-sponsors are the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Arkansas Educational Television Network's "Student Selects: A Young Filmmakers Showcase."

Documentaries must be 5 to 15 minutes long and can focus on any historic Arkansas property that is at least 50 years old. Entry instructions are available online at aetn.org/studentselects. Winning filmmakers will receive cash prizes and winning films will screen May 11 at Ron Robinson Theater in Little Rock.
