A staple on the lounge stage at George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville, local rockers The Odds are moving to the coveted garden stage tonight for a 15th anniversary celebration performance.

“Love is number one,” says keys player Derek Van Lynn of what’s kept them together this long. “That’s pretty ancient for a ‘local heroes’ band. We love each other and we love what we’re doing.”

Lynn says to get people dancing is always their scheme — and a mix of covers and originals with a good percussive base is the secret. But if people are listening to the lyrics, too, they might get a chuckle with their shimmying.

“We want to be kind of clever; we want them to have a smile on their face when they hear the lyrics,” Lynn says of the original numbers — often about humorous relationship situations most everyone can relate to.

After being around this long, locals have come to know some of their originals. But Lynn says sometimes even strangers will be singing along by the second chorus. “Seeing people respond to an original song, that’s like seeing your kid doing something well! It’s wonderful.”
