Frozen Toes 15K calls for tough trail-running feats

The Frozen Toes 15K Trail Run will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Kessler Mountain Regional Park, 2600 W. Judge Cummings Road in Fayetteville.

For the metrically challenged, 15K translates to approximately 9.3 miles.

Online registration is available until Thursday for $35 plus a $3 handling fee.

Packet pickup will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Academy Sports, 3864 N. Steele Blvd.

Participant check-in and race-day registration will be 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. at the concession building in Kessler Mountain Regional Park.

A short section will be on gravel road, but the majority of the race will use the single-track trail on Kessler Mountain. The website describes some of the trail as "technical." "Technical trail" is shorthand for obstacles, rocks and roots, a trail where skill determines speed.

Race organizers say the course is very similar to last year's, but the start and finish area are much improved due to completion of phase one of the Kessler Mountain Regional Park construction -- work that included the concession building and restrooms.

Runners will be chip-timed. Awards will be given to the fastest male and female overall and by age group. All finishers will receive a medal. Custom event socks will also be given to the first 135 registrants (registration was already at 130 runners last week).

There will be hot soup available for runners at the finish line. There will also be a "post-race hangout" at Foghorn's Wings Burgers & More, 1545 W. 15th St. in Fayetteville. Participants are invited to enjoy a discounted beer and limited selection of complimentary appetizers from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Day of the Undead Zombie Run 5K

Who says that Zombie Runs should be relegated to the Halloween portion of the calendar? An actual zombie outbreak could occur at any old time throughout the year; best to be prepared.

The Southern Arkansas University Game Development and Design Department is hosting a zombie run beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday at the SAU Welcome Center, 100 E. University St. in Magnolia.

Online registration is available until midnight Wednesday for $20 per runner.

Packet pickup will be at the starting line from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Saturday. Race-day registration will be available "for a slightly higher fee," say race organizers.

Donations and other race proceeds will be used to allow SAU's Game Development and Design Department to travel to design conferences.

Zombie runs are generally 5Ks with a twist -- the twist being that each runner is equipped with a flag-football-style belt which (usually) holds three flags. The zombies, in all their undead glory, are volunteers who wander the course trying to yank flags from runners' belts.

To win the race, a runner must not only finish first, but "survive" by having at least one flag still attached to the belt.

The race will not be timed. Every finisher will receive a dog-tag medal, and the first three "survivors" to cross the finish line will get custom 3-D-printed medallions.

No word from organizers on whether the zombies will be quick-running or The Walking Dead type, but crossbows and katanas should be left at home.
