Greenwood takes command in fourth en route to win against Siloam Springs

SILOAM SPRINGS -- Greenwood's defense took over the game at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs forced six Siloam Springs turnovers on their first 10 possesssions in the fourth, fueling Greenwood's 15-2 run.

The Lady Bulldogs made just enough free throws at the end to hang on for a 45-40 5A/6A District 1 victory at Panther Activity Center.

It was the first league win for the Lady Bulldogs (9-10, 1-3), while Siloam Springs (4-16, 0-6) is still searching for its first.

"Our conference is well-balanced," said Greenwood coach Clay Reeves. "All of our games have been close, just like all their games have been close. Our kids, they took care of the ball at the end, made the reight decisons. We got a few turnovers there at the end and we just want to capitalize on all those free throws. We're growing and understanding the game more and learning more every day."

Greenwood trailed 27-25 going into the fourth quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs tied the game on a basket by freshman Harley Terry, one of two ninth-graders who saw extensive playing time for Greenwood.

Sara Reeves hit two free throws with 6 minutes, 14 seconds left to give Greenwood the lead for good.

Chloe Price got the Lady Panthers within 29-28 with a free throw, but Greenwood scored the next nine points. Baleigh Wiginton converted a three-point play, and Susannah Stein and Wiginton each hit a pair of free throws. Reeves had another basket to push the lead to 38-28. Price ended the run with a free throw, but freshman Jaelin Glass scored to give Greenwood its biggest lead at 40-29.

Siloam Springs answered with a 10-3 run to pull within 43-39, taking advantage of some missed free throws by Greenwood.

"Couldn't score enough to get back over the hump once they got the lead," said Siloam Springs head coach Tim Rippy. "But I'm proud of them. I thought we competed our rears off physically. ... You know, don't give up on this team yet. We're playing hard and we're getitng better, and we're right there. We're right there, and I think they know it. They're starting to sense it."

The Lady Panthers paid special attention defensively to sophomore guard Kyiah Julian, often face-guarding her throughout the game. Julian finished with 10 points but had plenty of help from her teammates. Glass finished with nine and Sara Reeves added eight for Greenwood.

Price led Siloam Springs with 13 points, while Morgan Vaughn had 12 and Hadlee Hollenback nine.

The Panthers saw a 15-point lead in the third quarter disappear as Greenwood went on a 18-3 run to tie the game 41-41 in the fourth quarter.

Siloam Springs responded by outscoring the Bulldogs 16-7 over the final 5:56 of the game.

The win was the second straight for the Panthers (7-13, 2-4). Spencer Lashley and Josh Hunt each scored 13 points to lead Siloam Springs, while Noah Karp added 12. Zane Harmon scored all 18 of his points in the second half to lead Greenwood (3-16, 0-4), while Jordan Sheppard added 15.
