Arkansas falls at Georgia

The No. 16 University of Georgia gymnastics team won three of four events to down No. 23 Arkansas 196.225 to 195.025 on Friday at Stegeman Coliseum.

Georgia (3-1, 2-1 SEC) won its third consecutive meet and improved to 8-0 at home against the Razorbacks (0-3, 0-2).

Arkansas’ top performer was sophomore Sydney McGlone, who won the balance beam with a 9.9 and tied for second on the vault with a 9.875.

The Razorbacks’ lone event victory was the beam, where they edged the Bulldogs 49.0-48.725. In addition to McGlone’s winning score on the event, freshman Kirby Rathjen debuted with a 9.825, senior Samantha Nelson scored 9.8, freshman Jessica Yamzon had a 9.75 and junior Mia Bargiacchi posted a 9.725.

Arkansas competed for a second consecutive meet without senior All-American Amanda Wellick, who is lost for the season with a right leg injury.

Georgia’s Sydney Snead scored 39.125 to win the all-around competition behind a victory in the vault (9.9) and a second-place tie on the bars with a 9.825 behind teammate Rachel Dickson’s event-winning 9.85.

Georgia scored big on the floor exercise with a 49.275, paced by GiGi Marino’s 9.9 and Sabrina Vega’s 9.875.

The Razorbacks return home Friday night to face No. 4 Alabama at Barnhill Arena.

BASKETBALL

Miller, Harrison SEC legends

Former Arkansas center Oliver Miller and former Ole Miss guard Jason Harrison, who played at Little Rock Parkview High School, were announced Friday as SEC legends this year.

Miller and Harrison will be honored at halftime of the Razorbacks’ and Rebels’ opening games at the SEC Tournament on March 8-12 in Nashville, Tenn.

Miller helped the Razorbacks to a 115-24 record during his career and played on conference championship teams all four of his seasons with Arkansas.

Arkansas won three consecutive Southwest Conference titles from 1989-91 and won the 1992 SEC title as Miller starred on the inside alongside point guard Lee Mayberry and forward Todd Day.

Miller ranks ninth on the Razorbacks’ career scoring list (1,674 points), third in rebounds (886) and first in blocked shots (345).

Harrison helped Ole Miss win two SEC West titles. The Rebels played in the NCAA Tournament three times during his career from 1999-2002. He had career averages of 8.1 points and 3.2 assists.

Other SEC legends this year are George Linn (Alabama), Marquis Daniels (Auburn), Matt Bonner (Florida), Jimmy Pitts (Georgia), Keith Bogans (Kentucky), Tasmin Mitchell (LSU), Dontae Jones (Mississippi State), Jon Sundvold (Missouri), Bobby Cremins (South Carolina), Ron Slay (Tennessee), Acie Law (Texas A&M) and Barry Booker (Vanderbilt).

Hendrix women down Berry

The Hendrix College women’s team defeated Berry College 69-45 on Friday night in Mount Berry, Ga.

Hendrix (9-8, 3-3 Southern Athletic Association) led the entire game, including a 20-10 advantage after the first quarter and 39-24 at halftime.

For the game, the Warriors shot 47.3 percent (26 of 55) from the field, 6 of 22 from three-point range and 11 of 17 at the free-throw line. They also had a season-low eight turnovers.

Berry (9-8, 3-3) shot 29.1 percent (16 of 55) from the floor, 1 for 17 on three-pointers and 12 of 14 at the free-throw line.

Hendrix center Sara Dyslin finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Heather Prowse added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Hailey Bode finished with 11 points, while guard Amber Turner had 10 points and 4 assists for the Warriors.

TRACK AND FIELD

Sullins sets school record

Arkansas sophomore Erich Sullins set a school record in the weight throw at 60 feet, 10¾ inches to take third for the No. 4 Razorbacks on Friday at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.

Razorbacks senior Ken LeGassey cleared 6-11½ to finish fifth in the high jump.

Arkansas’ No. 2 women’s team got first-place finishes from Daina Harper in the 200 meters and its distance medley relay.

Harper, a senior, won in 24.20 seconds. The distance medley relay of freshmen Carina Viljoen, Alexandra Byrnes and Taylor Werner, and sophomore Kailee Sawyer won in 11:33.43.

Arkansas junior Taliyah Brooks, training for the pentathlon, took fourth in the long jump at 5-7¼ and seventh in the 200 in 24.75.

The meet concludes today.

GOLF

Greystone CC to close Jan. 31

Greystone Country Club in Cabot will close its golf course effective Jan. 31.

The club will continue to operate its restaurant, bar and driving range after that date. The swimming pool will open for the summer based on demand.

This is not the first time Greystone has closed. Current ownership took over the course in April 2012.

The closing of Greystone leaves Cabot with two courses — Cypress Creek Golf Course and Rolling Hills Country Club.
