10K, 25K set for Saturday at Village Creek State Park

The Village Creek Trail 10K and 25K footraces will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Village Creek State Park.

Runners and walkers will tackle an out-and-back, wooded course that is described as a tough single track with some open spaces atop Crowley's Ridge.

The website adds, "There are markings everywhere! We still look forward to hearing the one person that stares at their feet the whole race come tell us they got lost."

Organizers will provide two aid stations, but without cups. Runners are expected to carry their own water bottles.

Walkers are welcome in the 25K (about 15 1/2 miles), but a 6 1/2-hour time limit will be strictly enforced. According to the website, those not off the course by then "will be hunted down by trained falcons/flying monkeys that will swoop down and snatch you off the trail."

There will be no age group competition. Awards will be given to the first 10 males and 10 females who cross the finish line. Every finisher will receive a finisher's medal.

The park is in eastern Arkansas six miles southeast of Wynne. The state's second largest park, it encompasses just over 6,900 acres. (The largest park is Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area in Rogers with more than 12,000 acres.)

Online registration is available until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, and each race costs $30. Online registration is at racesonline.com; search for "Village Creek Trail 10K 25K."

Race-day registration will be available in the park before 8:15 a.m. at no extra charge.

Race director is Ethan Cook of the Muckas Running Club, (870) 238-4610.
