Police charge man in Boston bombing

BOSTON — A homeless man was charged in a rushhour bombing that damaged a Boston police cruiser Friday morning but caused no serious injuries.

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said Sunday that he doesn’t know the motive of the rush-hour explosion. A device deliberately left under the vehicle went off by itself, he said.

Police arrested Asim Kieta, 42, on Saturday night. The charges include possession of an explosive device and assault with intent to murder.

Evans said surveillance video helped police track down Kieta. Evans said Kieta grew up in Boston and is homeless.

Californians flee overflowing rivers

LOS ANGELES — Fast-moving floodwaters swept through mountain communities, and residents fled homes below hillsides scarred by wildfires as the third — and largest — in the latest series of storms produced heavy rain and warnings about damaging mudslides on Sunday.

The National Weather Service cautioned that the system was expected to gain strength throughout the evening and could be the strongest storm in at least seven years. California has been swamped during a wet winter that has caused a deluge of rain and snow after years of drought.

Residents in rural Santa Cruz County watched Sunday as the San Lorenzo River spilled over its banks for the second time this month, sending muddy water and debris into yards and homes. No injuries were reported.

In Northern California, the San Francisco Bay Area was under a high surf advisory along the coast until early Tuesday. Waves of up to 19 feet were expected, National Weather Service meteorologist Steve Anderson said.

“Surf will be coming up and down, but coming so fast there’s no break,” he said.

San Antonio mall shooting fatal to 1

SAN ANTONIO — A robbery inside a San Antonio shopping mall ended with shots fired on Sunday, leaving one person dead, three others shot and another two people taken to a hospital with non-shooting injuries, police and fire officials said.

“What we have here is a robbery gone really, really bad,” Police Chief William McManus said.

When two robbers fled the jewelry store at the Rolling Oaks Mall on Sunday, a man tried to stop them. One of the robbers then fatally shot the man, McManus said.

A second person, who was carrying a licensed concealed weapon, then shot and wounded that robber, McManus said.

The other robber fled the mall, firing his weapon and injuring a man and a woman. Those two victims, along with the injured robber and two other people, were taken to area hospitals.

Police said the second robber, who initially fled the scene, was arrested Sunday night.
