SoNA Fourth

Also at the Walmart AMP this week, the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas and conductor Paul Haas will be at the center of the Fourth of July Spectacular, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The festivities will include a patriotic concert, family activities and a 15-minute firework display, sponsored by the city of Rogers, at 9:15. Community meet-ups

Procter & Gamble is hosting community get-togethers, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in Northwest Arkansas Wal-Mart parking lots to honor area Wal-Mart employees and locally made products with games, free hot dogs and other refreshments (while supplies last), free activity books and free product samples. Legacy of slavery

Blake Wintory, assistant director of Arkansas State University's heritage site at the Lakeport Plantation, will describe important new findings in the history of slavery at Lakeport and in Chicot County in a talk titled "Slavery at Lakeport," noon Wednesday in the Darragh Center, Central Arkansas Library System Main Library, 100 Rock St., Little Rock.

Blytheville workshops

The Arts Council of Mississippi County is holding two free summer workshops at Ritz Civic Center in Blytheville that require advance registration:

• "Stage and Special FX Makeup for Beginners," 1:30-3 p.m. July 17-21, open to adults and students 12 and older. Registration closes Friday. Participants will learn about professional products, how to design makeup with a character in mind and techniques of applying stage makeup and special effects makeup, including basic enhancements, fantasy makeup, cuts and bruises, old age and simple prosthetics. The workshop will include the use of liquid latex and other latex products. Candie Groves is the instructor.

• Photography for Beginners, 9-10:30 a.m. July 24-27, open to anyone age 8 and older. Registration closes July 14. Participants will need to provide their own digital camera with removable memory disc. Students will use parks, a fire station, churches and historic buildings as subject matter and attend daily discussions on aspects of photography. Instructor will be David Lyttle. An exhibit of workshop-produced photos and photos of students involved in the Stage Makeup Workshop will be on display in the Ritz Gallery during August.
