Adam Hoxeng's fondness for the military can be traced back several generations.
His great-grandfather, Carl Hoxeng, received a Purple Heart during World War I after being shot while fighting in the Forest of Argonne in northeastern France. Another great-grandfather, Alphonse Zeis, entered World War I at the age of 17 and by the end of his military career was the commander of his own battleship.

Adam Hoxeng is beginning his military career while attending the United States Military Academy at West Point. While there, he will study space science, learning about the designs and intricacies of rockets and missiles.
"Space has always been interesting to me," Hoxeng said. "I would look forward to going to new and unexplored places, and there's not many of those left here on earth to do that. I want to see the unknown. And I've always loved math and science, so it just all came together for me."
Prior to his senior year, Hoxeng experienced a one-week residential seminar program sponsored by the United States Air Force Academy in 2016. He also participated in a one-week resident program in 2014 with the United State Naval Academy.
As a student at LISA Academy in Little Rock, Hoxeng achieved the highest GPA in the school's history. His GPA from grades 9 through 12 was 4.53.
"It really wasn't a goal to get straight A's," said Hoxeng, who took 13 Advanced Placement classes in his final two years of high school. "But I took as many AP classes as I could. I am proud of having the highest GPA ever at our school."
Hoxeng also made an immediate impact for LISA Academy's golf team. He was the team's captain all four years at the school.
"That was a very humbling experience," Hoxeng said. "I'm good, but I'm not fantastic."
Hoxeng has enjoyed two trips to Turkey, a place where he found the people to be charming and welcoming to visitors.
"It was fantastic," Hoxeng said. "Hospitality is their thing. Strangers would welcome us into their homes for tea.
"But we went there at a good time. A year later, some of the places I visited are now in trouble and in bad shape. It was strange seeing some of the places I had visited just a year before and seeing how different it looks now. It's crazy."
