Superhero on screen
The Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau's River Market Movies in the Park will screen Captain America: The First Avenger (PG-13, 2011), at dusk Wednesday at First Security Amphitheater in Little Rock's Riverfront Park, off President Clinton Avenue (easiest access is via Ottenheimer Plaza, on the east side of Ottenheimer Market Hall). The amphitheater opens an hour ahead of the screening. Admission is free. Moviegoers should provide their own blankets and/or chairs; families, picnics and leashed pets are welcome, but glass containers are not. Porter Prize winner
Arkansas novelist and playwright Padma Viswanathan is the recipient of the $2,000 2017 Porter Fund Literary Prize, presented annually to an Arkansas writer with a substantial and impressive body of work. An award ceremony for this and the annual Booker Worthen Literary Prize will take place Oct. 26 in the Darragh Center, Central Arkansas Library System Main Library, 100 Rock St., Little Rock. Admission is free.
Novelist Jack Butler and novelist and lawyer Philip McMath founded the Porter Prize in 1984. The annual prize has since gone to 31 poets, novelists, nonfiction writers and playwrights, including 2010 recipient Bob Ford, a Fayetteville playwright and novelist, who informed Viswanathan that she had received the award.
Viswanathan is the author of two novels, The Toss of a Lemon and The Ever After of Ashwin Rao, and also writes plays, short stories, essays and cultural journalism. She lives with her family in Fayetteville, where she is an associate professor of creative writing at the University of Arkansas.
