• FORT SMITH -- Forty delegates, representing about 1,000 United Mine Workers in Arkansas, met in special convention here today to take action on Governor Brough's refusal to reappoint Thomas Shaw of Midland, their choice for state mine inspector. Milton Dollar of Jenny Lind was elected chairman, Hugh Hamilton of Midland vice chairman, Bert Bailey, Greenwood, secretary.

• Six inmates at the Pulaski County Penal Farm sawed through the bars in a cellblock and escaped about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. The six were identified as Thomas Ray Yon, 36, of 3614 Harper Road; Willie Reynolds, 28, of 504 East Sixteenth Street; Danny T. Holcomb, 17, of Fort Smith; James W. Walker, 24, of Jacksonville; Jack N. Estes, 42, of Arkadelphia; and Edward Whittick, 24, of Port Neches, Tex. Deputies at the County Sheriff's Office said the men waited until the night clerk, a trustie, went into another part of the building to wake up a cook, then slipped out through the office.

• MOUNTAIN VIEW -- Tactical changes made by marijuana growers since law-enforcement officials began aerial surveillance in 1989 were evident Thursday in Stone County. Gone are the large plots of marijuana in hidden but generally accessible locations. In their place are small, scattered plots located in remote, rugged areas. Nevertheless, with the help of the Arkansas Army National Guard, state and local officials located and eradicated 86 5-foot-tall marijuana stalks. Each plant has a street value of about $1,000, law officers said.

• An inmate who was set to testify Monday about a federal defendant's jailhouse confession to a DeWitt murder surprised prosecutors by declaring from the witness stand that "it was a lie," then denying that his grandmother's life was threatened overnight. "Did you not just tell your lawyer that Joshua Howe sent word to you through another inmate that he knows where your grandparents live?" Assistant U.S. Attorney Ed Walker asked Charles Wayne Moore. "No sir," replied Moore, a 26-year-old state prison inmate who sat in a federal courtroom in Little Rock in an orange jumpsuit from the Pulaski County Jail, where he was housed over the weekend while waiting to testify in a murder case against Howe, 27, and Robert Phillips, both of Pine Bluff.
