Arkansas authorities identify boy, 16, fatally injured in police shooting

The 16-year-old boy who was shot Tuesday evening by Marion police outside a youth shelter has died, authorities said.

The shooting took place outside an emergency shelter for youths at 104 Cypress Ave., Arkansas State Police said.

At 7:08 p.m., Marion officers responded to the shelter. Moments later, a teenager was reported shot and critically wounded by police, according to a news release.

The 16-year-old boy, identified in a later statement as Aries Clark, died overnight at a Memphis hospital, state police said.

Investigators will submit a file to the corresponding prosecuting attorney's office. That department will determine whether use the use of deadly force was legally justifiable, the release said.

The state Department of Human Services licenses and contracts with the Marion juvenile center, called East Arkansas Youth Services, the agency said.

The location is licensed to serve 20 minors and had 12 residents at the time of the shooting, a news release stated. Counseling and trauma services will be made available to those who were there.

"Our condolences go out to the family of the youth who died and our thoughts are with all involved," the department said.
