• Men of the Twelfth Provisional Regiment today will begin the construction of rifle butts, one for each company for rifle ranges. The range will be only 50 and 100 yards, and .22 calibre cartridges will be used in the regulation Springfield rifle. Steel cartridge forms will be filled with the small calibre cartridges, after which they will be placed in the clips and used as the regular calibre ammunition. With the camp of the First Arkansas Infantry in the rear of the range site, the use of the regulation ammunition is unsafe.

PINE BLUFF -- A beleaguered union is engaged in a test battle with the city of Pine Bluff. The Pine Bluff Street, Sewer and Sanitation Department's 78 employes have been on strike for higher wages since Monday. They are represented in their demands by the Arkansas Council of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employes. It's the first time city employes have struck in Arkansas.

• A Little Rock woman threw marijuana into the middle of the street early Tuesday night to protest perceived apathy from police about the contraband, which she found behind her house. "I called 911 and said I was about to throw this damn stuff out into the street," an exasperated Argie Austin, 67, said Wednesday. She said she called about 7:15 p.m. in an effort to get some reaction from police. About 10 minutes later, as the rain poured, she emptied the four sandwich-sized bags of marijuana she had found.

• Three University of Arkansas at Little Rock students say they have figured out a way to harness airport information systems in a way that will cut the time airline passengers have to wait in line for tickets, security and baggage. With the Federal Aviation Administration forecasting record air travel delays this summer, their timing could be fortuitous. As part of a class project, the students developed a program that synthesizes the information airports collect or can collect in a way that will allow airports to better manage space and the airlines that use that space. As a result, they say, passengers would spend less time waiting in lines and airports would make more money.
