Church, family applauded for assisting foster children

Treatment Home's Healing Arkansas Children, an event to honor those who make a difference in the lives of foster children with special needs, took place Tuesday at the Governor's Mansion. It was the 34th year for the event.

Saint Mark Baptist Church was given the Make a Difference Award for its involvement in the community and making children a priority. Little Rock District Judge Mark Leverett, a church deacon, accepted the award.

The Angel Award was given to Hank Bates, his wife, Barbara Miles, and their daughters, Elisabeth and Jessie, for their donations to the organization, which have included providing toiletries, a stuffed animal and a blanket to foster children who often have nothing to call their own.

When accepting the award, Miles noted, "It's the small things, y'all. That's what makes a difference, and I know this from being a foster child."

Honored with candles lighted in their memory were the late Nora Wesson and the late Rev. James Nelson, foster parents who had recently died.

Treatment Homes Inc. is a nonprofit mental health organization that provides therapeutic services for foster children and families.
