• MALVERN -- The publisher of the Malvern Daily Record is a woman. The editor and associate editor are women. So is the business manager. So is the circulation manager. For that matter, so are the bookkeeper and the advertising artist. In the world of journalism, generally regarded still as a man's world, the Malvern Daily Record has for 18 years been a woman's stronghold. Mrs. Kate Brice Beerstecher, widow of J. H. Beerstecher, the founder of the Daily Record, took over the paper on the death of her husband.

• Magic Springs' X-Coaster reopened to passengers Sunday, a day after a dozen passengers were stuck upside-down on the ride for a half-hour during a power failure, the amusement park's general manager said. The passengers were at the peak of a 150-foot-high loop, billed as the world's largest inverted ride, when the Hot Springs park lost power at 4:55 p.m. At 5:27 p.m., power to the park was restored, and the passengers, still strapped in their seats, were brought down to the gate. One passenger, 37-year-old Jay Plummer, was taken to St. Joseph's Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs after throwing up and complaining of head and neck pain.
