Church celebrates 125 years of helping, ministering to the community

More than 420 guests gathered in the Robinson Center ballroom June 10 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Saint Mark Baptist Church.

The black-tie affair began with a reception and music by Rodney Block. A seated dinner included herb-roasted half chicken with garlic herb mashed potatoes and sauteed broccoli and Key lime pie or raspberry brulee cheesecake for dessert.

The program included remarks by Andre Bernard, the Rev. Phillip Pointer and the Rev. Jason Ray. In addition to Block, entertainers included Bijoux and the comedian Chocolate. Serica Cole served as the evening's master of ceremonies. At the end of the evening, 28 congregants were recognized for 50 or more years of church membership.

Proceeds from the celebration benefit the Tendaji Community Development Corp., which partners with Saint Mark in an outreach center that helps provide medical screenings, employment and job readiness assistance and legal counseling.
