Nuke-site cleanup subject of meeting

FAYETTEVILLE -- Leaders of a cleanup project at a nuclear reactor test site will host a community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Strickler Fire Department building.

Work began about six months ago at the Southwest Experimental Fast Oxide Reactor site, which ceased operations in the early 1970s.

The U.S. Department of Energy in September awarded a $10.5 million cleanup grant to the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, which owns the site about 20 miles southwest of Fayetteville.

Some preliminary planning work had been done years earlier after a $1.9 million federal grant in 2009, but recent months have involved removing asbestos and assessing radiation levels to get ready for a partial demolition.

However, a UA official has said approximately $16 million more is needed to remove the site's reactor vessel, with the current funding expected to pay for work through September.
