• Letters for lonely soldiers are requested from Arkansas people in a letter received last night by the Gazette from Adrien Van Hecke, Tent 70, Harderwijk, Holland. Mr. Van Hecke is a Belgian soldier, interned in the Holland camp, and is putting in his spare time instructing his fellow prisoners in the English language. To dispel the gloom of prison life and to assist his pupils in the mastery of the language, Mr. Van Hecke requests correspondence, although he does not say why he selected Arkansas for his appeal.

• Little Rock police officers, who have been gradually switching to the use of 9mm semi-automatic handguns, will likely receive some financial help with this transition from the city tonight. The city Board of Directors is expected to approve a resolution that would authorize the city manager to accept bids and award an annual contract for the purchase of handguns. The guns cost $347 each, and about 200 will be purchased during the course of the contract with American Public Safety of Birmingham, Ala. Many officers have bought the guns on their own in recent years. Vice Mayor Jim Dailey said the guns have proved to be more accurate than some of the other larger, more powerful handguns used by officers. They also allow for multiple rounds to be fired quickly.

• A proposed site for a new school in far west Little Rock prompted questions about traffic flow, buffer zones and grade configurations at a community forum Monday evening attended by about 50 people at the Thompson Library. The community forum is part of a 180-day study that the Little Rock School District is conducting on the possible construction of a school on about 18 acres at West Taylor Loop and Cantrell roads. If built, the school would be the first new school in the western part of the city since the 1978 opening of Fulbright Elementary. The new building is intended to relieve student overcrowding at Fulbright and Terry elementary schools, each of which now relies on portable buildings to house some classes.
