Invasive beetle spreads to 18th county

The emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle that feeds on and kills ash trees, has been confirmed in Drew County, the state Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

Drew County has long been part of a 16-county buffer zone. Moving ash products out of that zone is prohibited.

Since the first detection in Arkansas in 2014, the emerald ash borer has been confirmed in 18 counties: Bradley, Calhoun, Clark, Cleveland, Columbia, Dallas, Drew, Garland, Hempstead, Hot Spring, Lafayette, Montgomery, Nevada, Ouachita, Pike, Randolph, Saline and Union. The buffer zone is composed of adjacent counties.

Quarantined items include firewood of all hardwood species, and the following ash items: nursery stock; green lumber with bark attached; and other material living, dead, cut or fallen, including logs, pulpwood, stumps, roots, branches, mulch and chips of an inch or greater. Firewood is the only quarantined item that relates to all hardwood; all other quarantined items are relative only to ash.
