Traffic on U.S. 70 will shift for work

Work on U.S. 70 in Saline County will require periodic lane closings and shifting traffic onto new pavement through Saturday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Intermittent flagging operations will control traffic as crews make the lane shift between the Interstate 30/U.S. 70 interchange and the Caney Creek Bridge. The lane shift allows the contractor to continue widening the roadway.

Motorists should consider alternate routes during construction, including U.S. 270, the department said.

The work is part of a $78.5 million project to widen 17.5 miles of U.S. 70 from I-30 in Benton to U.S. 70B in Hot Springs to five lanes. It is now a two-lane route with some passing lanes. The project is scheduled to be completed in late 2018.
