Work on overpass to halt I-49 traffic

Crews placing overpass beams over Interstate 49 in Bentonville will require closing all lanes for multiple 15-minute periods for three nights over the next week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Lanes on a 2-mile section in the vicinity Arkansas 72 will be closed to accommodate the work from 11 p.m. today until 5 a.m. Friday, weather permitting. They also will be closed during the same hours on July 6-7 and from July 9-11, the department said.

Advance warning signs will be placed to notify traffic approaching the closure and the Arkansas State Police will control traffic. The department said motorists should find alternative routes to avoid the interstate closure.

The work is part of a $27.7 million project to widen 3.5 miles of I-49 to six lanes from four between U.S. 62/Arkansas 102 and Arkansas 72. The project is to be completed late this year.
