Program on racial divide set for today

A special program scheduled for today is aimed at helping to bridge racial and ethnic divides.

The idea for the "Breaking Barriers" interdenominational service came about after Daniel Anderson -- the pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in Little Rock -- contacted the Rev. Benny Johnson and Walter Crockran about their work with the Arkansas Stop the Violence organization, according to an interview they gave to the Fox 16 Good Day television news program on KLRT-TV.

The religious leaders discussed, among other things, how Interstate 630 can be a dividing line for racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups.

That discussion led to the idea of today's special program, which aims "to break down the barriers and bridge the gap between all religious groups and ethnic groups," according to an email from the Stop the Violence organization.

"We are trying to get everyone in our state to develop a relationship with each other," Johnson said.

Today's program, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., will be held at Greater Trinity Church of Christ in God, 2400 Wright Ave. in Little Rock.
