BASKETBALL

Lyon earns No. 3 seed

The 10th-ranked Lyon College women's team earned a No. 3 seed Wednesday night in the NAIA Division I National Tournament and will play its opening game against sixth-seeded Pikeville (Ky.) University at 9 a.m. March 16 in Billings, Mont.

It is the sixth consecutive national tournament appearance for Lyon (27-5) which enters after finishing second during the regular season in the American Midwest Conference. The Scots lost to Freed-Hardeman in the conference tournament championship game but still clinched an automatic bid into the national tournament.

BASEBALL

Wonder Boys split in Mississippi

Arkansas Tech University split a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday with No. 18 Delta State in Cleveland, Miss.

The Wonder Boys (13-6) trailed 2-1 after the first inning of the opener, before scoring seven times in the third to take an 8-2 lead on their way to a 10-3 victory.

Quentin Bowling got the victory in relief for Tech, allowing 1 hit in 3 innings while striking out 2.

Mark Vaughn went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and a double, while teammates Cody Wescott and Michael Post each went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Wonder Boys.

The second game was tied 3-3 after the first inning before the Statesmen broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning for the game-winning run for a 4-3 victory.

SOFTBALL

UCA handles Mississippi Valley

Kate Myers went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI to lead the University of Central Arkansas over Mississippi Valley State, 9-3, on Wednesday in Conway.

Kaylyn Shepherd went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored for the Bears (7-16).

Ellie Reaves (2-5) got the victory for UCA, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits with 2 walks while striking out 2 in 31/3 innings. Kayla Gomness pitched 32/3 innings of relief, allowing 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Arkansas wraps up zone competition

Three University of Arkansas, Fayetteville divers completed NCAA Zone D Championships on Wednesday at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia, Mo.

Junior Nicole Gillis led the way with a 13th-place finish with a 10-dive total of 450.60. Gillis advanced to the finals on a five-dive score of 227.75, the second best by a UA diver this season. Gillis qualified for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in the 1 meter and 3 meter springboards earlier in the week.

Sophomore Marissa Green finished 20th with a personal best 200.75, while sophomore Molly Harvie followed just behind with a 199.20.

The Razorbacks will now participate in the national championships March 15-18 in Indianapolis.
