Food Network fans come in several flavors. There are those who watch the instructional cooking shows, absorb all the lessons and actually make the demonstrated recipes. And there are those who watch those shows and never cook any of it. It's purely entertainment for them.

Then there are those of us who prefer competitions such as Cake Wars, Guy's Grocery Games, Chopped, Cooks vs. Cons and Bakers vs. Fakers.

Throughout the year, the limited series Baking Championship pops up with themes like Holiday, Halloween, Kids, Christmas and the latest theme, Spring -- which debuts with back-to-back episodes at 8 and 9 p.m. today.

Baking contestants whip through two rounds of challenges spread over seven hour-long episodes. In the "pre-heat" round, a baker can earn a special advantage for "the main-heat." Episode topics are:

"Easter Treats" with Easter egg desserts and bunny cakes

"Sweet Vacations" with desserts inspired by trips.

"Derby Desserts" with a sweet take on mint julep desserts and cookie garlands.

"Springtime Remodeling," where the dense, dark brownie gets lightened up.

"Momcentric" in which vintage desserts and "mom classics" get a makeover.

"Rainy Day Sweets" showcasing whoopie pie critters and a rainfall cake.

"Memorial Day Delights" featuring American flag cakes. This is the finale, and when the flour settles, one lucky baker will celebrate a $50,000 victory.
