UALR hosts book collection crafted by 71 Cuban artists

"Binding Communities: Cuba's Ediciones Vigia and the Art of the Book and Entrepreneurism," a multimedia exhibit of handcrafted books by Cuban artists, goes on display Tuesday in the Ottenheimer Library, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 2801 S. University Ave., with a 4:30 p.m. reception in the library's Room 535. Admission is free.

The exhibit, featuring books that 71 artists created from 1985 to 2016 for Cuban publishing house Ediciones Vigia using collages of repurposed materials, will be on display through April 19. Bill Fisher, a San Antonio-based lawyer and rare book collector whose Ediciones Vigia collection is part of the exhibit, will give a talk at the reception.

Also in conjunction with the exhibit, book artist Steven Miller, a faculty member at the University of Alabama who has collaborated with Cuban artists to create book editions, will give a lecture at 5 p.m. Friday in the Fine Arts Building, Room 161. And Miller will hold a bookmaking workshop, "Get Under the Covers. Let's Make Books!," 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and March 19 in the Applied Design Studio, University Plaza 300, Asher and University avenues.

Piano, cello, soprano

ARmusica -- Julie Cheek, piano; Stephen Feldman, cello; and Suzanne Loerch, soprano -- will give a recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 4106 John F. Kennedy Blvd., North Little Rock, as part of the St. Luke's Festival of the Senses series. The program will include the Cello Sonata No. 3 in A major, op.69 by Ludwig van Beethoven and vocal selections by Henry Purcell, Jake Heggie, Ricky Ian Gordon, Kurt Weill and George and Ira Gershwin. Miller time

Irish dancers

Women of Ireland, an ensemble of Irish step dancers (including world champion Kelly McDonnell and special guest Anthony Fallon, world champion and former lead dancer with Riverdance), will put on a St. Patrick's Day program of Irish music and dance, 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Alma Performing Arts Center, 103 Main St., Alma. Springdale cabaret

The Lower Gallery of the Arts Center of the Ozarks, 214 S. Main St., Springdale, will transform into a cabaret-style lounge for the fourth Main Street Music Night, 7:30-9 p.m. Saturday. Rogers singer-guitarist Cameron Johnston and Fayetteville multi-instrumentalist Marcus Garoutte will blend roots, rock and blues. Tickets are $10, $5 for students.
