4 candidates added to ASU job search

The Arkansas State University’s posting for a new chancellor has brought in four more applicants, bringing the total to 18.

The Jonesboro university — with the help of a 21-member appointed search committee — started the search for a new leader Feb. 14 and is giving applicants prioritized consideration through April 17. Candidates are vying to replace interim Chancellor Doug Whitlock, who was appointed to the post after the former chancellor resigned just before the fall semester began.

Former chancellor Tim Hudson left the job without a severance package in August after several internal audits and one state audit uncovered nepotism and conflicts of interest. He was paid $360,000 annually, and Whitlock is being paid the equivalent of $305,000 annually.

Whitlock’s contract runs through June 30, but it can be extended on a month-bymonth basis if needed, Arkansas State University System President Chuck Welch has said. Welch is hoping for finalists to visit the 14,085-student university in May and start in July.

The four new candidates are:

Joe King, biology professor at Auburn University at Montgomery, former provost of the Alabama school and former vice chancellor and provost and acting chancellor at the University of New Orleans.

Timothy Quinnan, vice president for student affairs at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Deborah Vess, former vice president of academic affairs at Amarillo College in Texas and former associate provost for undergraduate studies and academic program at the City University of New York.

Tracey Human, inspector general lead evaluator of the 97th Air Mobility Wing at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma.
