Cat beating, torture prompt $40,000 reward offer for information

CLEARFIELD, Utah — A reward offered in the search for suspects in the gruesome beating and torture of a pet cat in Utah now stands at more than $40,000.

The Humane Society of Utah said an anonymous donor contributed $10,000.

The 6-year-old cat named Sage belonged to a family from Clearfield, north of Salt Lake City.

Sage went missing March 5, was found Wednesday and died Thursday.

The Humane Society said the cat's eyes were glued shut and someone tried to use glue to prevent it from urinating or defecating. It also had broken ribs and its face beaten.

Spokeswoman Deann Shepherd said the community "is saddened and angry at the same time."

The organization is asking people with information to contact it or Davis County Animal Services.
