Ups equaling downs, state index rises 1.01

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, rose 1.01 to 348.16 Thursday.

"U.S. stocks were mixed Thursday on lighter volume as volatility remained low after Wednesday's [Federal Reserve] rate hike, with health care and utilities underperforming," said Leon Lants, managing director at Stephens Inc. in Little Rock.

Winners and losers on the index were split evenly.

Total volume for the index was 22.1 million shares.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
