Education's discontents

By Paul Greenberg

This article was published March 19, 2017 at 1:56 a.m.

Remember those state funds set aside to help needy students get a college education? That $9 million would no longer be available under a new law devised by the masterminds in the state's misnamed Department of Higher Education, which keeps adopting lower goals. That department is directed by Maria Markham, who seems less interested in preparing the state's students to become educated citizens of a self-governing republic. Instead she seems intent on molding them into whatever the state's job market demands.

Your writing and commentary were excellent until you veered off into all taxation is bad territory.

dear life long learner, didn't the first paragraph. mention funds set aside for "needy" students ? i'm assuming the ones who would need the education in technology and future job skills instead of basket weaving. if it were up to me we would bring back Latin as a required high school subject to give everyone a good background in language. are grants "given" to schools ? If you had read another article in today's paper you would have gotten a good look at what our colleges pay their coaches for sports not higher thinking.
