Matthew Johnson, health and wellness program director at Mercy Hospital, has lived in Fayetteville off and on since 2007. Johnson said he wanted to join the Planning Commission to help shape communities that help support healthy living and green space.

"I've always enjoyed architecture and design and wanted to find ways to give back to our community and serve in whatever way possible," he said.

Zara Niederman co-owns with his wife 3Volve Community Ecosystem Development, which builds houses, commercial spaces and neighborhoods in south Fayetteville. Niederman said he wants to bring what he has learned from living in a variety of cities to the commission.

Planning should revolve around the city's 2030 goals, particularly discouraging urban sprawl and encouraging connectivity, Ziederman said.

"I really believe in that," he said.

Sloan Scroggin, a math instructor at the University of Arkansas and real estate agent, said he wants the city to continue to rank among the top places to live in the nation. The city's rapid growth will require careful planning for the future, Scroggin said.

"I just know Fayetteville's going to grow a lot," he said. "Basically, any projection says that. I think it's important the growth be sustainable."

The Planning Commission will select officers Monday. Nominations include Ron Autry, chairman; Matt Hoffman, vice chairman; and Allison Thurmond Quinlan, secretary.

The council will take up the nominees for the Advertising and Promotion Commission at its next meeting. The commission on Monday selected sitting At-Large Commissioner Robert Rhoads and co-owner of Mockingbird Kitchen Chrissy Sanderson to fill two of three spots up for grabs. The commission will seek applications for the remaining tourism spot in the coming weeks.

Other selections include: Bret Park and Bryn Bagwell, Fayetteville Public Library Board; Teresa Turk, Historic District Commission; Catherine Donnelly and Nicole Meria Pratt, Animal Services Advisory Board; Charles Leflar, Audit Committee; Warren McDonald and Jason Peebles, Civil Service Commission; and Sara Baker and John Dupree, Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals.
