Danville man, 46, found dead in river

The body of a Danville man was pulled Tuesday morning from the Arkansas River in Fort Smith, according to police.

The Fort Smith Police Department said in a news release that it and the Fort Smith Fire Department responded about 10 a.m. to a report of a body in the river.

Workers dredging the river near the Interstate 540 bridge had spotted the body, later identified as Matthew Wood, 46, and notified authorities, police said.

After pulled Wood's body from the river, emergency personnel found no obvious signs of trauma, the release said.

Wood's vehicle was found in the parking lot of Fort Smith Park and was believed to have been there for about two weeks, police said.

Authorities found the vehicle locked, according to the release. No items appeared to have been taken from inside.

Wood's body is being sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock for autopsy, police said. Foul play is not suspected.
