Transparency bills for charters a no-go in Arkansas Senate panel

Two bills to require that charter schools be subject to the state Freedom of Information Act and that governing boards hold public meetings failed to pass in the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday.

Senate Bills 712 and 710 by Sen. Joyce Elliott, D-Little Rock, failed in voice votes, with most senators present not voting.

Elliott said the bills would help provide some transparency to schools that are run with public money.

No one spoke against the bills.
