SPRINGDALE -- One man was killed in a four-vehicle crash that left traffic at a standstill near the Washington-Benton county line Friday morning.

The Springdale Police Department said Derrick Hammond, 35, of Springdale was killed in the crash at 8:25 a.m. on North Thompson Street.

The wreck involved a 2008 GMC Acadia, a 2004 Kia Sorrento, a 1999 GMC pickup and a tractor-trailer.

Hammond was driving the pickup. The driver and passenger of the Acadia were taken to a hospital with critical injuries. No other injuries were reported.

"There is also a power pole that is also down. Please avoid this area. All of North Thompson is shut down," Lt. Jeff Taylor stated on the Police Department's Facebook page around 9 a.m.

Traffic was affected as far as north Wagon Wheel Road, where it was blocked south at its intersection with North Thompson.

Officers directed drivers down side streets to alleviate some of the congestion, Taylor said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
