Mormon aid society

to mark 175th year

Women of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Arkansas have joined fellow church members around the world in celebrating the 175th anniversary of the church’s Relief Society this month.

The Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized in 1842 in Nauvoo, Ill., when a small group of Mormon women got together to help people in need. Today, the organization has a membership of six million in countries around the world and the society provides food, clothing and more to people in need. Arkansas is home to seven stakes — which are similar to dioceses — that oversee 70 congregations, each with a Relief Society.

The celebration of the 175th anniversary will culminate today with the annual women’s conference, which will be broadcast live to meetinghouses around the world, shown live at lds.org and available on BYU-TV.

Women and girls ages 8 and older are invited to watch the conference from 7-8:30 p.m. today. In Little Rock, the conference will be shown at 600 S. Rodney Parham Road and at 13901 Quail Run Drive. In North Little Rock, the meetinghouse is at 905 Kierre Drive. The conference will also be broadcast in locations around the state. Meetinghouse locations and contact information can be found online at lds.org.
