Gwatney Akins, 41, was booked into the Jefferson County jail on a charge of first-degree murder after he admitted to shooting Charles Tennie, 47, once in the chest about 7 p.m. Sunday at the Broadmoor Arms Apartments on South Wisconsin Street, Police Department spokesman Lt. David DeFoor said. The men lived in separate apartments at the complex.

DeFoor said Akins told investigators that the two men got into an argument and that Akins shot Tennie with a .44-caliber Special revolver.

The shooting occurred on a balcony outside Akins' second-floor apartment. After being shot, Tennie staggered down the stairs and collapsed on the ground, DeFoor said. He was pronounced dead about 7:50 p.m. at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

DeFoor said the two men had been drinking but not enough that they were intoxicated. They argued about various things and became angry, DeFoor said.

The death was Pine Bluff's eighth homicide of the year.
