Springfield scores late, tips Travelers

CARDINALS 11, TRAVELERS 10

Jose Adolis Garcia singled with two out in the bottom of the seventh to score Oscar Mercado from third with what became the winning run as Springfield took a 11-10 victory from Arkansas on Sunday at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

After Gabriel Lino popped out and Alex Mejia flied out, Mercado singled to right-center field off Travelers reliever Darin Gilles. Nick Martini followed with a single before Thyago Vieria replaced Giles and gave up the game-winning hit a single to Garcia. Jacob Wilson struck out to end the inning.

In the Travelers' eighth, Troy Marlette singled, moved to second on Joey Wong's sacrifice bunt and to third on Brock Hebert's ground out, but was left stranded when Nelson Ward grounded out.

In the ninth inning, Ian Miller walked and Ryan Casteel singled up the middle two outs later, but Marlette popped up to end the game.

The Travelers tied the game at 10-10 in the seventh inning when Kyle Waldrop hit a two-run home run to score Ward.

Trailing 9-1 going into the sixth inning, they scored 7 runs on 4 hits, 1 error, 2 walks and 2 hit batsmen off Cardinal relievers Chandler Hawkins and Trey Nielsen to close to 9-8.

Springfield pushed it to 10-8 in the bottom of the sixth when Eliezer Alvarez's one-out sacrifice fly scored Nick Martini.

The Cardinals jumped out to 7-0 lead in the fourth inning scoring all 7 runs with 2 out on 6 hits, 1 walk off Travs starter Michael Povse and reliever Kyle Hunter.

The Travelers made it 7-1 in the fifth when Waldrop singled to score Chuck Taylor.

In the bottom of the fifth, Caldwell and Jacob Wilson hit consecutive home runs to make it 9-1.

Tyler Bray (1-0) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Cardinals to close out the game and get the victory. Gilles (0-2) took the loss for the Travs, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in 2 innings.

Taylor, Waldrop and Chantz Mack led the Travs with three hits with Taylor and Waldrop scoring two runs. Waldrop had 3 RBI and Taylor had 2 RBI.

Five players -- Martini, Garcia, Caldwell, Lino and Mejia -- had two hits for the Cardinals.
