Art song recital

Mezzo-soprano Rosella Ewing, sopranos Stephanie Smittle and Anna Squire and pianist Tatiana Roitman will give a recital at 7 p.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 310 W. 17th St., Little Rock. The program includes the Ruckert-Lieder by Gustav Mahler, Hermit Songs by Samuel Barber, chansons by Henri Duparc, Gabriel Faure and Claude Debussy and a set of waltzes by Frederic Chopin. Talking trash

Betsy Spetich, recycling and reuse specialist in the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality's Environmental Solutions and Preservation section, will discuss what discarded items reveal about the culture of past civilizations as well as observations about today's society in "Tales From the Trash," noon Wednesday in the Darragh Center, Central Arkansas Library System Main Library, 100 Rock St., Little Rock. It's part of the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies' monthly Legacies & Lunch Series. The session explores the findings of the Garbage Project, a two-decade-long investigation into American consumer habits that studied trash and landfills. Partial sponsor is the Arkansas Humanities Council. Admission is free. Attendees should provide a sack lunch; the Butler Center will provide drinks and dessert. 'Hybrid' band

JJ Grey & Mofro, which Southern Living magazine describes as producing "an amalgam of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Southern rock, the soulful funk of James Brown, the rhythmic blues of Otis Redding, the gospel spirituality of Brother Dave Gardner, the songwriting skills of Neil Young and the yarn-spinning prowess and stage presence of Grand Ole Opry great Jerry Clower," performs at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Revolution Music Room, 300 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. High-school honorees

Wynne High School's production of Shrek the Musical has been nominated for awards for outstanding front of house, outstanding production materials, outstanding dance execution, outstanding hair and makeup, outstanding set, outstanding featured actress (Marlee Wilson as Pinocchio) and outstanding lead actress (Emma Lawyer as Fiona) in the Memphis' Orpheum Theatre's 2017 High School Musical Theatre Awards.

Blytheville High School's production of Lucky Stiff received nominations for outstanding Artistic element and outstanding featured actor (Paris Harvey as Ensemble Man No. 1).

Nominations went to 35 participating schools in western Tennessee, eastern Arkansas and northern Mississippi. The winners will be announced at 7 p.m. May 25 at the Orpheum Theatre, 203 S. Main St., Memphis. Winners in lead actor categories will compete in the Jimmy Awards, June 26 at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway in New York.
