• The Pulaski County Medical Society has adopted the following protest against the proposed occupation tax to be voted upon on Friday: "Those who are in a position to know the financial status of our city government declare the city revenues for maintaining it to be entirely inadequate, and that some measures are necessary to overcome this deficiency. This condition, they maintain, is consequent to the cutting off of the whiskey revenue and saloon tax."

• A member of the State Hospital Board said Monday that two top hospital officials who were hired last week were political appointments made by the superintendent. Bill F. Troxell of Little Rock, the Board member, said he had objected to the employment of Willis Ricketts of Fayetteville as business manager of the Benton unit and of Ted Spurlock as assistant hospital administrator. Ricketts was the 1962 Republican gubernatorial nominee. Spurlock, former Craighead County judge, replaces Jim Phillips, who was asked to vacate his job to make room for a Republican appointment.

• Gov. Bill Clinton said Friday that he is not ready to make a decision regarding clemency for Steven Douglas Hill, who is scheduled to be executed Thursday. "I have been asked to consider it and I have reviewed the file and I have a couple of other questions before I make a final decision," Clinton said during a news conference. A spokesman for Lt. Gov. Jim Guy Tucker -- who serves as governor when Clinton is out of the state -- said Tucker had reviewed Hill's case and would make his own decision regarding clemency sometime next week.

• Workers are replacing the Pulaski County Juvenile Justice Center roof this week, and Public Defender Dorcy Corbin sees the repairs as a potential end to her constant sore throats. The county is replacing the roof at a cost of $127,000 after the Arkansas Department of Labor found toxic mold in the building. The leaky roof could have led to the mold growth, and state officials told the county to fix or replace the 66-year-old building's roof. County employees are also scrubbing down walls with bleach and replacing waterstained ceiling tiles throughout the building, at 3001 W. Roosevelt Road, to comply with the state's recommendations.
