Bears hold on, take down Golden Lions

University of Central Arkansas Coach Allen Gum tied Doug Clark as the program's winningest coach Tuesday as the Bears defeated the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff 6-5 at the Torii Hunter Complex in Pine Bluff.

Gum earned his 209th victory at UCA. He arrived in Conway in 2010 after spending five seasons at Southern Arkansas University.

Dusty Wright went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double for the Bears, who outhit the Golden Lions 12-10. Cody Davenport, Justin McCarty and Jansen McCurdy each had two hits for UCA.

The game was tied at 5-5 entering the seventh inning, but Davenport's RBI single off Golden Lions reliever Nathan Sawrie (2-5) scored Rigo Aguilar to give the Bears a 6-5 lead.

UAPB had the tying run on third base with one out in the bottom of the ninth after UCA reliever Ty Tice uncorked a wild pitch to allow Jordan Reed to advance to third. But Tice struck out Jordan Knox and Juan Soriano to earn his seventh save of the season.

Brandon Hagerla (8-3) pitched two innings of relief to earn the victory. He allowed two hits and struck out one.

UCA took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on McCarty's RBI double and Davenport's bases-loaded walk.

The Bears extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second as Hunter Strong reached on an error by Golden Lions second baseman Bradly Lopez, allowing Keaton Presley to score.

UAPB pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the third. Jaques Moore and Aderly Perez each hit RBI singles.

Wright hit his first home run of the season in the top of the fourth to give UCA a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Wright doubled to center field for a 5-2 advantage.

Joshua Williams' RBI single in the bottom of the fifth cut UCA's lead to 5-3. The Golden Lions tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth as Jerimiah Figueroa hit an RBI double and Lopez had a run-scoring single.

Figueroa and Sergio Esparza each had two hits to lead the Golden Lions.

NORTHWESTERN (LA.) ST. 1

Riley Pittman went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI as the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (18-30) routed Northwestern (La.) State (18-29) at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.

Pittman hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning and a two-run shot in the sixth inning. He also had an RBI double in the second inning.

UALR scored seven runs in the first two innings and never relinquished its lead.

Hunter Owens also went 3 for 4. Zach Baker, Kale Emshoff and Nik Gifford each had two hits for the Trojans, who outhit the Demons 15-6.

Carter Brown (3-1) allowed 1 run on 6 hits in 8 innings for UALR. He struck out four and walked two.

Cade Jones hit an RBI single in the eighth inning for Northwestern State’s lone run.
