Policy set on extra polling site requests

Voters in Pulaski County now have a deadline when requesting extra polling locations ahead of elections.

On Thursday, the Pulaski County Election Commission established a formal procedure for voters who want to provide input regarding the locations and number of early voting sites for all elections held in the county.

Under the new rule, requests must be submitted to the commission in writing no later than two business days before the commission meeting in which members establish polling locations.

While preparing for the Little Rock School District's special election this month, which saw a turnout of more than 11,000 voters, the commission arranged for four extra polling locations -- "but that was kind of by hook or by crook," said commission Director Bryan Poe.

"We don't feel confident we can do that going forward," he said. For instance, "if someone asked us tomorrow, then we're just kind of scrambling around trying to find something."

Currently, the commission has arranged for one extra polling site for the coming Pulaski County Special School District special election, which will be held June 13. That extra site will be at the Jack Evans Senior Citizens Center in Sherwood.
