The Kiwanis held their 31st annual “Good Hearts” Youth Excellence awards on May 3. Twenty-nine schools in Washington County participated by honoring students whose struggles may not otherwise be known. The following students were honored: Adriana Cornejo, Alyssa Edwards, Angie Richert, Brittany rush, Chloe Deavens, Derrick Escobar, Felicity Rubio, Gavin Carney, Jarod Friend, Jose Manjarrez, Khalil Akbar, Nakiya Livingston, Tony Cervantes, Alle Hatfield, Amelia Southern, Avery Roton, Casey Ginn, Daniel Rogers, Ethan Luper, Foster Layman, Hunter Pelton, Jessica Wall, Karlee Pense, Malachi Maurice, Skyler Autry and Tristan Pina.

Orchids

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. today at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend. Noted grower Barbara Hinton will be showing pictures she took of the yellow slippers in Madison County, as well as other wildflowers from the area.

The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly raffles for members and occasional public auctions offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.

Squares

The Kingsdale Squares will dance at 7 p.m. Monday at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista. Kenton Sullivan will be the caller. There will be a mainstream workshop at 6:30 p.m.

BC Dems

The BC Dems will meet at noon Monday at the Golden Corral, 2605 W. Pleasant Crossing in Rogers. Lunch will begin at 11 a.m. The featured speaker will be Greg Leding, state representative for district 86. He will summarize some of the actions of this last legislative session.

Art Guild

The Rogers Art Guild will meet at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church, 805 W. Olrich St. in Rogers. Nita Williams will give the program about her art of caricatures.

Garden Club

The Bentonville Garden Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Peel Mansion Museum. The meeting will be the last one before the summer break.

Hill 'N Dale

Hill 'N Dale Hiking Club of Bella Vista will hike half of the Redding Loop on the Ozark Highlands Trail on Wednesday. This will be four miles of easy to moderate hiking, mostly downhill. The original hike on this trail was postponed due to weather. Nonmembers are welcome.

Hill Hikers

The Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, invite all interested walkers to join us for a 5K or 10K walk at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pea Ridge National Military Park, 15930 U.S. 62 in Garfield.

Photographers

The Photographic Society of Northwest Arkansas Gallery and Studios will be hosting a class on Adobe Photoshop Portrait Editing from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the gallery, 207 N.E. Second St. in Bentonville. Well-known local portrait photographer Wendy Dunn will teach the class on portrait processing workflow. This includes tips and tricks for producing finished portraits in a time-efficient process. Topics will include color cast and balance, skin retouching, cropping and enhancing images through the use of Actions.

Civil War

The Northwest Arkansas Civil War Roundtable will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the General Store on the grounds of the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, 118 W. Johnson Ave. in Springdale.

The program will be given by Laura Jennings, the new park historian at Prairie Grove State Battlefield Park. Her presentation will be on "Visions of Prairie Grove," focusing on plans for the expansion and preservation of the Prairie Grove park.

The meeting is open to everyone with an interest in Civil War history.

Cancer Support

Hope Cancer Resources offers a support group for women living with any type of stage IV cancer. This month's meeting is from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Members must RSVP to attend.

Nurses

The Retired Nurses of Northwest Arkansas will meet at noon May 30 at Northwest Medical Center of Bentonville, 3000 Medical Center Parkway in Classroom A. The guest speakers will be a team from Circle of Life Hospice Legacy Village in Bentonville. An optional lunch or beverages will be available from the Allspice Cafe from 11:15 a.m. and brought to the meeting.

Nature Society

The Flower, Garden and Nature Society of Northwest Arkansas presents the 20th annual "Through the Garden Gate" tour from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10. Seven private gardens in Fayetteville and the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks will be featured. This is a rain or shine event. Tickets are $15 for the tour and are available at all Westwood Gardens and at the Botanical Garden.

Cancer Support

This supportive and educational group is for adult patients, caregivers, families and friends coping with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, MDS or other blood cancers. The group will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 13 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.
