Family: Being happy or unhappy is a choice

Happiness author and expert Gretchen Rubin says people can choose to be happy or choose to be unhappy.

About 50 percent of happiness is genetically determined, she says. The next 10 percent to 20 percent of happiness results from life circumstances: age, marital status, income and education, based on multiple studies by University of California researchers. That remaining 30 percent to 40 percent? It’s all you.

The trick is knowing how to capture that remaining 30 percent to 40 percent of happiness.
