4 bodies found in tent high on Everest

KATHMANDU, Nepal — Sherpa rescuers have found the bodies of four climbers inside a tent on the highest camp on Mount Everest, raising the death toll this climbing season to 10, authorities said Wednesday.

The bodies were found by rescuers who were there to recover the body of a Slovak mountaineer who died over the weekend, Tourism Department official Hemanta Dhakal said.

The identities of the dead climbers in the tent were still unknown, and other rescuers were heading there to learn more details.

Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, who was coordinating the recovery of the Slovak climber’s body, said the Sherpa rescuers found the four bodies on Tuesday night.

The bodies were at Camp 4 at South Col, at 26,247 feet, which is the last camp before climbers make summit attempts. Any recovery attempt would require many Sherpas, who would have to take the bodies down to Camp 2, from where they can be winched by helicopter.

Caste clashes in India lead to arrests

LUCKNOW, India — Police rushed forces to a north Indian town on Wednesday and arrested dozens of people to stop clashes that broke out when upper caste Hindus fired on Dalits belonging to the lowest rung of India’s caste hierarchy.

Police officer Aditya Mishra said one person was killed and dozens injured in the violence Tuesday. Angry Dalits set the homes of some upper caste Hindus and police vehicles on fire in retaliation.

Mishra said the Dalits were attacked while they were returning from a rally led by their leader Mayawati in Saharanpur, a town in Uttar Pradesh state. Mayawati, who uses one name, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party of supporting the upper caste Hindus.

“Police are on high alert and people have been advised not to venture out,” Mishra said.

No fresh violence was reported as of Wednesday afternoon.

The area has been simmering with tensions since one person was killed in a clash earlier this month. The violence flared when upper caste Hindus objected to Dalits installing a statue of their leader, Bhim Rao Ambedkar, in a temple complex in Saharanpur.

Brazil protests unruly, soldiers to go in

BRASILIA, Brazil — Brazil’s president ordered soldiers to restore order in the country’s capital Wednesday after some government ministries were evacuated during clashes between police and protesters who are seeking the leader’s ouster.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched to Congress to protest economic policies that President Michel Temer is pushing through and to demand he step down over a corruption scandal.

In a brief national address during the unrest, Defense Minister Raul Jungmann said troops were being sent to guard federal buildings, including the presidential palace. The weeklong deployment was authorized by a presidential decree that left open the possibility that soldiers could be used more widely in Brasilia. The decree said Jungmann would decide the scope.

In all, 1,500 troops were to be deployed, the Defense Ministry said.

In response to the release of a recording that appears to capture Temer approving hush money for a convicted former lawmaker, Brazil’s top court has been investigating him on accusations of obstruction of justice and purported involvement in passive corruption. The president is resisting calls to resign and has said he will fight the accusations.
