Bell hired as Razorbacks' radio sideline reporter

Geno Bell, who played on the defensive line for the Arkansas Razorbacks in 1993-1995 and 1997, will be the team's new sideline reporter on radio broadcasts starting with the 2017 season, it was announced Thursday.

Bell is replacing Quinn Grovey, who is moving from the sideline to the radio booth to take over for Keith Jackson as the color analyst and work with play-by-play announcer Chuck Barrett

Jackson resigned after 17 years as the Razorbacks' analyst.

Bell, who works as a senior director of transportation at Wal-Mart, had 185 career tackles for the Razorbacks, including 11 sacks, and was a member of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville's first SEC West championship team in 1995. He played in the NFL with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns.

"I am humbled knowing that this first-class athletic program could have selected from rosters full of worthy men and women," Bell said in a statement. "It is an honor and my sincere pleasure to be invited back to be a part of the Razorback Family that I love so much."

Quitman hires coach

Quitman High School has hired DJ Marrs as its new head football coach.

Marrs was an assistant coach at Joe T. Robinson in Little Rock for seven seasons.

The Senators, with Marrs at offensive coordinator, averaged 38.8 points per game and went 11-2 in 2016, losing to eventual Class 4A state champion Warren in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Marrs replaces Brian Narretto, who led Quitman to a 7-4 season last season. The Bulldogs lost to Carlisle in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

UA's Redlicki splits at NCAA Tournament

Arkansas Razorbacks senior Mike Redlicki was eliminated in singles play at the NCAA Tennis Championships on Thursday in Athens, Ga., but he won his doubles match with senior teammate Jose Salazar.

Redlicki and Salazar beat Ohio State's Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 to become the first University of Arkansas, Fayetteville doubles team to advance to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals since Marcus Hilpert and Euan McGinn in 1994.

Redlicki and Salazar, 14-8 this year, play Oklahoma's Andrew Harris and Spencer Papa today.

Before Redlicki's and Salazar's doubles victory, Texas' Yuya Ito beat Redlicki 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in singles play. Redlicki finished 28-11 in singles matches this year.

Hogs' Overstreet at NCAAs

Arkansas freshman Mason Overstreet will tee off today at 8:57 a.m. at the NCAA Men's Championships at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Overstreet, of Kingfisher, Okla., is playing as an individual at the NCAAs after a final round 5-under-par 67 carried him to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional last week. He is the fourth Razorback to advance as an individual, following R.H. Sikes in 1963, Bud Still in 1995 and Craig Lile in 2000. Sikes in Arkansas' only individual NCAA champion.

Overstreet is scheduled for a 2:17 p.m. tee time Saturday.

Arkansas Tech's season ends

The Arkansas Tech University men's team's season ended Thursday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Championships at Kissimmee, Fla.

The Wonder Boys lost a 3-2 decision to Lynn in match play.

Ryan Spurlock shot a 67 to earn a five-stroke victory in the No. 1 group over Lynn's Martin Cancino. Putter Srinoon had a 72 in the No. 5 group for Arkansas Tech's other victory.

Arkansas Tech finished in the top four in NCAA Division II for the first time. The Wonder Boys advanced to the semifinals after defeating Barry in a one-stroke tiebreaker victory in match play in the quarterfinals earlier Thursday.
