Missing in action

Seaman Herbert Renshaw fell overboard while serving in the U.S. Navy just off the coast of South Carolina during a naval patrol. He was 20 years old at the time. The accident happened on May 22.

Of 1917.

Gone are the days when the Pentagon kept good records on those who went missing in action during World War One. The unit currently dedicated to accounting for MIAs only worries about those missing since World War Two.

Now, because of the dedicated efforts of a handful of part-time historians and generally good people, Seaman Renshaw's name will be added to a memorial at Brookwood American Cemetery near London, England. Yes, he fell overboard a great distance from the war, but he died in blue water serving his country--when his country was fighting.

It's taken 100 years, but Herbert Renshaw deserves to be remembered. RIP. Finally.
